Guitars That got Away

1984 Fender Stratocaster

An early Vintage Reissue Fender Stratocaster

A move into the early vintage reissue guitars

So at one point in time, I figured these very early vintage reissue guitars, you know, the ones that are pretty bloody terrible, would go up in the value, so I started buying a few of them. This example here, was a mint condition 1984 Fender Stratocaster with all the case candy. I was right, for a time they did go up in value a little bit, the trouble was, I paid way too much for this particular guitar, AUD$6,000 which even today is too much let alone way back in 2008!

However, it is a very pretty guitar and it was a better guitar than most of the guitars from this period that I have played, so I figured I was onto a winner here. I kept it for several years waiting for that moment when they took off, but it never happened in any real significant way. The reality is, I would have been better off sinking my money into more John English Masterbuilt guitars, at least I would get all my money back on a sale.

Serial Number: V013993

Neck Date: None

Body Date: None

Pot Dates: 30 Week, 1983

I sold this guitar to a collector on the Central Coast of NSW who has bought a number of guitars off me, and yes, I lost money on it. In some ways I was sad to see it go because it was such an original guitar, with all case candy, and very pretty to look at in the flesh. However, I was in a big sell off phase and it had to go, so off it went to a new home and in good company too.
